Yeah so, i would like to know how you guys think its best to populate a site?

Ill say it once, Ill say it again: CONTENT is king. Getting people to a site is easy, through ads, links, etc. POPULATING a site is tougher, because after you get a visitor, you have to give them a reason to come back. Content, both good quality and changing, is the way to do that. Sure, a pretty design will wow them, but they wont return time after time just to see the pretty pictures.

One of the best ways for content: User interactive sites. Blogs with comments, Forums, any way you can allow users to interact and contribute will make your site even stronger when it comes to attracting repeat visitors. For blogs, dont make users register to comment. For forums, make sure the way to register is quick and easy, maybe without requiring an activation email.

If you are new with your site then your should starting from directory submission and complete via article submission, blog submission to forum posting for populate your site

I gave up on directory submitting as it takes a long time and you can get many more backlinks from doing different things

Well some of them are forums, blogs, information websites, exchanges, paid links etc.

Well, I mainly use the forum way, but I'm still on about 10 directories.

For me its word of mouth advertising, of course your content is how your going to generate word of mouth. If you like free advertising and have time on your hands you can generate your own initial word of mouth advertising to get the ball rolling.

Great places to start: Facebook, Blogs, Gaia, Myspace, Myyearbook, Directories, specialty forums.

Like I am starting an online business that will be selling independent clothing and music both from my company and from other indie companies and I am organizing a mixture of word-of-mouth rep from myspace, gaia, craigslist as well as indie bloggers.

To keep users we'll be using a blog of our own with updated content, a mailing list that gets to the point on new products and news in the indie world, an easy to use interface thats youthful and a bit grungy and finally our customer service combined with excellent products and great sales techniques.

I would like to develop on this a bit more, the way I developed my advertising campaign is by using only free word of mouth advertising and I am building an online street team to help promote the site its up to 5 people at the moment and am building up to atleast 30 or more people.

Its all about utilizing every connection you can.

Word of mouth is always good.
